Mochi's Adventures

Mochi is a real cat. He lives in Bogotá and, in his books, he travels with his friend Chispa, a tiny hummingbird, to the festivals of the Spanish-speaking world. Each book has a story to read together, pictures to color and spot-the-difference games.

This page is for parents, grandparents and teachers: here is what the books are like.

This is Mochi in his favorite spot: on top of the fridge.

Hi, I'm Mochi!

I'm a colorpoint cat: my body is cream, my face, ears, paws and tail are chocolate brown, and my eyes are very blue. I live in Bogotá with my family and my sister Zella, a gray cat.

I love watching everything from up high and poking my nose into everything. That's why, in my books, I go traveling: I want to find out how people celebrate in Spain and Latin America. From every place I bring home a little piece of what I learn: part of a costume, a recipe or a song.

And this is my friend Chispa

He's a tiny hummingbird who knows the paths of the wind. When I ring my bell and he flaps his wings really, really fast, a magic breeze picks us up and flies us somewhere new in an instant.

Chispa is made up. Mochi is not.

Real and drawn

Mochi in the books

To draw Mochi we start from his photos: the dark face, the blue eyes, the fluffy chest and that tail that looks like a feather duster. In the books we add a bell to his collar, which is what sets Chispa's magic in motion.

The illustrations are made with the help of artificial intelligence; then we clean them up and check them one by one. How we make our books.

The series

Three journeys, three celebrations

  • Cover of La noche de los disfraces (Costume Night): Mochi in a witch hat among pumpkins, marigolds and Chispa the hummingbird

Book 1 · Halloween and the Day of the Dead

Costume Night (La noche de los disfraces)

It's October 31 and Mochi has no costume… yet! With Chispa he sets off to find a very special one, with a piece from every place: the Castañada in Catalonia, Samaín in Galicia, the Day of the Dead in Mexico, the giant kites of Guatemala, Witches' Night in Chile and much more, with nothing scary at all.

  • Cover of Una Navidad en familia (A Family Christmas): Mochi in a paper boat on a cloud at night, with Chispa and a star above a town

    Book 2 · Christmas

A Family Christmas (Una Navidad en familia)

The star on the nativity scene is broken! Mochi and Chispa travel across Spain and Latin America to make it shine again: Colombia's little candles, Mexico's posadas, Puerto Rico's parranda, Catalonia's Tió and many more traditions.

  • Cover of ¡Fiesta de colores! (A Festival of Colors): a girl in a yellow skirt, carnival dancers and Mochi with maracas

Book 3 · Carnivals and festivals

A Festival of Colors (¡Fiesta de colores!)

Mochi wants to show his family a little of every culture so they can all celebrate together. With Chispa he visits the most joyful festivals of the year: the Blacks and Whites Carnival in Pasto, cumbia in Barranquilla, the silleteros of Medellín, the Diablada of Oruro, the chirigotas of Cádiz and many more.
